Ontario International Airport Authority adopts strategic business plan summary

ONTARIO, Calif. - January 7, 2013 -- Preparing for the transfer of Ontario International Airport (ONT) to local control, the Ontario International Airport Authority (OIAA) today adopted a Strategic Business Plan Executive Summary to set the primary goals that will guide decision makers, leaders and managers in creating success for the airport.

In a 5-0 vote, the Commissioners signed off on the Business Plan that begins with a Mission Statement for ONT under OIAA's control:

Operate and grow Ontario International Airport as one of the most competitive,
efficient, innovative and customer-friendly passenger, cargo and business airports in the United States as a key economic asset serving the Inland Empire and the entire Southern California region.

"Presenting publicly an outline for a business plan lends credibility to what our turnaround strategy is and the direction we are going with it," said OIAA President and Ontario City Council Member Alan D. Wapner prior to the vote.

The Business Plan identified four initial goals for ONT:

  • Reduce airline costs
  • Develop airport-related businesses
  • Expand air service
  • Provide customer friendly facilities and services

The Business Plan was developed by a subcommittee of OIAA Commissioners consisting of Ontario Mayor pro Tem Jim W. Bowman and Orange County Business Council President and CEO Lucy Dunn, in consultation with OIAA staff.

Dunn supported having "an overarching aspirational plan that helps guide our thinking as we move forward in preparation for ultimate local control of the airport."

Added Bowman, "It's a roadmap for cooperation with the business community as well as developing the ancillary properties around the airport."

The Business Plan noted that the City of Ontario and the County of San Bernardino established the OIAA on August 21, 2012 to:

  1. Manage the Ontario International Airport as a separate enterprise from that of city government.
  2. Develop a specialized airport work force with the necessary knowledge, skills and abilities.
  3. Manage the Airport's procurement process efficiently using private sector methods wherever appropriate.
  4. Plan for the highest and best use of all Airport property and facilities in concert with the surrounding infrastructure and land uses.
  5. Respond nimbly to market opportunities.
  6. Separate Airport finances from City of Ontario and County of San Bernardino finances.

Commissioner Ronald O. Loveridge said the "exceptionally well-crafted" Business Plan clearly demonstrates the need for an independent regional authority.

OIAA Vice President and San Bernardino County Supervisor Gary Ovitt urged the Commissioners and OIAA staff to disseminate the Business Plan to the Southern California Association of Governments and other agencies "so that we can get the message out as to how we hope this airport will be run in the future once we gain control."

The next OIAA meeting is scheduled at 10 a.m. Monday, February 4, 2013.

A Message from the new LA County GOP Chairman, Mark Vafiades

Greetings!

On Saturday Dec. 15th, the newly-elected LA County Central Committee members (your local Republican Party representatives) convened and elected the new Board of Directors and Executive Committee members.

We have a great opportunity over the next two years to work together as a united party and begin turning around Los Angeles County, and making Republican candidates and causes competitive once again. I was humbled by the support I received from my fellow Central Committee members last Saturday, and I take the trust that has been placed in me very seriously. As promised, my commitment is to build a professional organization at RPLAC, one that will bring credibility back to our organization. Mark Vafiades

It is important to realize that our Party has had major challenges over the past few years and revitalizing it will take time but, by working closely together and utilizing the resources and talents we have available to us, we will see strong and measured improvements over the next few months.

I want to welcome the new Executive Board, and thank them for taking the time to volunteer their efforts and energy to rebuilding our Party. We have lots of dedicated individuals within RPLAC, and we will work together to have success in future elections. We all witnessed just last month, what can happen when our political infrastructure does not operate effectively.

Republican Party of Los Angeles County - Executive Board:

Chairman: Mark Vafiades
1st Vice-Chair: Stephen Smith
2nd Vice-Chair: Arturo Alas
Treasurer: Albert Gersh
Assistant Treasurer: Nancy Kremer
Secretary: Brad Torgan
Assistant Secretary: Susan Kennedy

I am excited and enthused to work with our new team, and with each of my fellow Central Committee members. I look forward to working together as we rebuild RPLAC into the political organization we all deserve and expect.

I want to wish each of you a very safe and happy Holiday Season, as you spend time with family, friends and loved ones. This last week reminds us all how fortunate we are to be surrounded by those who care for us, and add so much to each of our lives.
Thank you for your support!

Sincerely,

Mark Vafiades, Chairman
The Republican Party of Los Angeles County

Editorial: Status quo must be OK in Claremont, La Verne, San Dimas

Things must be going pretty well in the three Inland Valley cities that regularly hold their City Council elections in March of odd years.

Either that, or apathy rules in Claremont, La Verne and San Dimas.

It's mostly the former in the case of these three well-run cities, in our view.

La Verne won't even hold an election this coming March. No challengers filed to oppose incumbent Mayor Don Kendrick or Councilwomen Robin Carder and Donna Redman, so all three will have another term by default.

Nor did any San Dimas citizen step forward to take on Mayor Curt Morris or Councilmen Denis Bertone and Jeff Templeman… (Read more)

Mike Antonovich Sends a Warning

ANTONOVICH WARNS “CLEAN WATER” TAX FLYER MISLEADING

LOS ANGELES COUNTY—Supervisor Michael D. Antonovich urged county residents to check their mailboxes for the “Official Notice to Property Owners of Public Hearing” which could result in a property tax increase.

“While the mailing looks like junk mail, it is an important document that allows one to protest the proposed parcel tax,” he said.

“It is vital that property owners return the protest form to stop this additional tax,” he added.  “Property owners, schools and businesses already pay flood control taxes and now they are being asked to fork over more money at a time when families are struggling, schools are hurting and businesses are fleeing the state.”

Residents have until January 15 to file their objection by returning their protest form or protesting at the public hearing on January 15, 2013 at 9:30 a.m. in the Hearing Room of the Board of Supervisors at the Hall of Administration.  If a majority of the property owners do not object, the Board of Supervisors can approve a mail-in-ballot to be sent to all property owners in March.  Passage requires only a simple majority.

Those who misplaced this mailer, please call (800) 218-0018 or emailwater.info@dpw.lacounty.gov.

Emken Supports Sequestration Transparency Act

Republican U.S. Senate candidate calls on Feinstein to join House approval to require details of impact of automatic cuts to defense and other spending

(ORANGE COUNTY, CA) - Republican U.S. Senate candidate Elizabeth Emken today released the following statement on the House passage of H.R. 5872, The Sequestration Transparency Act of 2012:

“Massive cuts to our national defense are due to kick in right after the November election, and Californians deserve to know how much damage these ill-advised cuts will do to California’s economy. We’re proud of the contributions Californians are making every day to our national defense, including our men and women in uniform, and the workers at California defense contractors who provide equipment and support to our troops in the field,” said Emken.

“Senators campaigning for re-election like to cite the vast influence they have over all things Washington. Dianne Feinstein can start by supporting HR 5872 to require the President to detail the impact these cuts will have on our economy as well as our national security.”
