It's primary season - do you know where the candidates stand?

Dear friend of liberty,

Are you tired of not knowing where candidates really stand on critical liberty issues?

Campaign season is upon us, and we’ve all heard the political rhetoric that goes with it.

Many of our legislators have gotten comfortable spewing pithy talking points and safely winning re-election year after year.

They count on you to forget their voting records, put party “loyalty” over principle, and expect that you will give them your vote without question — if you vote at all.

Party over principle and voter apathy have led to loss of liberty, and it’s time to put an end to this destructive cycle.

But how do we go about interrupting this cycle?

We must force candidates out of their comfort zones--demanding real answers to important liberty questions rather than letting politicians parrot meaningless talking points.

We must learn where candidates stand on important issues so we are prepared for the legislative season.

And we must open the lines of communication between you and your would-be lawmakers now so they will be expecting you to keep a watchful eye on them later.

That is why the California Campaign for Liberty is working on a Candidate Survey Program. Each candidate for the State legislature will soon be receiving a survey of seven important questions — questions that will put candidates on the record on liberty issues.

Candidates will be asked where they stand on:

Real ID (also known as Dangerous ID)
    Red light cameras
    Constitutional Carry
    Nullifying ObamaCare
    No-knock warrants
    TSA pat-downs
    State health care exchanges

As we work toward liberty, it is imperative to have current and potential legislators on record concerning Constitutional issues.

Many candidates will not want to go on record with their position on issues that are important to you. They would prefer to stick to their tired talking points, and they will ignore our survey unless you — their potential constituents — provide a little inspiration.

If candidates can’t answer basic liberty questions, they certainly can’t be trusted to vote correctly if elected.

Please call or visit your candidates for State House and Senate and ask that they complete and submit answers to the Campaign for Liberty survey that will soon be in their mailboxes.  Click here to find the list of state candidates who have filed.

Their deadline to answer is May 15, and results will be posted at campaignforliberty.org shortly after the deadline.

Politicians prefer to travel the path of least resistance. By applying enough pressure, we can force them to go on the record on key liberty issues.

In Liberty,

Deb Wells
Interim State Coordinator
California Campaign for Liberty

P.S. Campaign for Liberty does not support or endorse candidates for office. The goal of the Campaign for Liberty survey is only for keeping candidates true to their word should they be elected. It should not be construed as an endorsement of any candidate.

You are encouraged to research each of your candidates to make an informed decision on their positions.

Former Upland Mayor Pleads Guilty in Federal Corruption Case for Accepting Bribe from Businessman Seeking Permit from City

RIVERSIDE, CA—The former mayor of Upland pleaded guilty today to a federal bribery charge, admitting that he accepted a $5,000 payment in exchange for helping a business obtain a conditional use permit from the city.

John Victor Pomierski, 58, who resigned as mayor last year after he was named in a grand jury indictment, pleaded guilty this morning before United States District Judge Virginia A. Phillips. Pomierski becomes the third defendant to be convicted in relation to a corruption investigation in the city of Upland.

As a result of today’s guilty plea to the bribery charge, Pomierski faces a statutory maximum sentence of 10 years in federal prison. Judge Phillips is scheduled to sentence Pomierski on August 6.

“The public is entitled to honesty and integrity from the elected officials whom they entrust with power,” said United States Attorney André Birotte, Jr. “Mr. Pomierski broke that trust when he decided to accept a bribe in return for a promise to circumvent the city’s well-established permitting system. This kind of conduct is an affront to the voters who follow the law and play by the rules, and who have a right to expect their elected officials to do the same.”

John Edward Hennes, 55, a former member of the Upland Building Appeals Board, pleaded guilty in November to conspiracy and making false statements to special agents with the FBI. The indictment in the case alleged that Hennes communicated Pomierski’s extortionate demands to the business owner and collected money on behalf of Pomierski. Hennes entered into consulting agreements with the business owner to disguise the nature of the payments and to protect Pomierski. Hennes is scheduled to be sentenced by Judge Phillips June 25, at which time he faces a statutory maximum sentence of 10 years in prison.

The third defendant to be convicted in this case—Jason Roy Crebs, 39—pleaded guilty in April 2011 to aiding and abetting bribery. Crebs, who was co-owner of a business in Rancho Cucamonga called Venture West Capital, is scheduled to be sentenced on June 25, at which time he faces a statutory maximum sentence of 10 years in prison.

The fourth defendant charged Anthony Orlando Sanchez, 36, is currently scheduled to go on trial before Judge Phillips on July 24. Sanchez, a co-owner Venture Capital West, is charged with acting as a conduit between the Upland business and Pomierski.

The investigation in this case was conducted by the Federal Bureau of Investigation, which received assistance from the San Bernardino County District Attorney’s Office. In 2010, the FBI, the San Bernardino County District Attorney’s Office, and the United States Attorney’s Office formed the San Bernardino Joint Corruption Task Force to investigate allegations of corruption in San Bernardino County.

Citizen Candidate Miller Meets the San Dimas Chamber

by Zach Foster

SAN DIMAS, California — April 20, 2012 — Citizen Candidate for Congress David Miller joined the San Dimas Chamber of Commerce for a mixer hosted by Timothy Roe at the newly-opened Farmers Insurance Group located on Foothill Boulevard in San Dimas yesterday evening.

Candidate Miller spoke with San Dimas’ entrepreneurs over pot luck items and listened to business owners who aired concerns about lingering difficulties suffered by local businesses;  concerns with which Miller is familiar as a long-time small business owner.  “These difficulties are the economic result of failed policies pushed by failed leadership in Washington,” said Miller.

Members of the Chamber, Rodeo Board, Rotary Club, and City Council shared their ideas with Miller and absorbed his message to restore obedience to the Constitution and to revive the economy through private sector innovation.

Speaking to limitations outlined in Article 1, section 8 of the U.S. Constitution, Miller said, “Extra-constitutional regulations make it nearly impossible for businesses small and large to remain operational, and hinder their abilities to keep Americans working.  Many of our current legislators ignore their oaths to defend and protect the Constitutional limitations they swore to uphold.  I think America expects them to honor their oaths.”

Miller will attend the Meet the Candidates Legislative Reception hosted by the San Dimas Chamber of Commerce on May 25, 2012 from 6pm to 8pm at the San Dimas Civic Center.

David Miller is running for California’s 32nd Congressional District as a ‘citizen candidate.’  His campaign emphasizes restoring obedience to the Constitution, legalizing freedom, and maintaining America’s tradition of economic prosperity for ‘We the People.’

Assemblyman Donnelly Blasts Democrats for Silencing Your Voice

Assemblyman Donnelly stands up to defend the sovereignty of charter cities against SB 829, which would have prohibited charter cities from banning the use of project labor agreements (PLAs).

Assemblyman Donnelly believes contracting decisions should be left to the individual cities, not dictated from the State.

Democrats tried to silence debate on this issue Assemblyman Donnelly believes the 1st amendment also applies to your Representatives and any attempt to censor, diminishes your representation in Sacramento.

SB 829 would impact residents of 120 charter cities in the State, including the areas surrounding Assembly District 59.

Moderate Party: Moving On Without Regret

Dear Friend:

I really didn't want to send this email, so I'm keeping it short.  You can read a longer explanation here.

The California Moderate Party was an idea more than three years in the making and today I am saying goodbye.

Knowing when to call it quits is one of the most important decisions we make in all facets of our lives.  Having turned 30 this past February, I can't help but feel that this was a manifestation of my entire life's experience.  Yet, people weren't taking me seriously.

Although I was emotionally invested in this effort, I have no regrets about walking away.  We'll fix our political system somehow because the current trajectory is unsustainable.  But I can't tell you what that fix looks like.

What I can tell you is that we simply weren't generating the results we needed.  I don't know if that was due to lack of demand, credibility, media coverage, etc.  What I do know is that I'm ready to try something new.

A huge thanks to those of you who believed in this.  Big ideas take a long time before people adopt them and efforts like this move the ball further down the field - even if only a slight distance.

We'll maintain our digital presence and may reach out to you in the future if any pleasant surprises emerge (we will NOT give away your email address).

We also now have T-shirts available if you're looking for some moderate apparel!  Truth be told, there are many ways this effort could evolve, but I need to focus on self-preservation in the near-term.

Feel free to drop me a line anytime at ash.roughani@gmail.com.

Sincerely,

Ash Roughani

Citizen Candidate Miller motors ‘Cool Cruisers’

GLENDORA, California – April 9, 2012 – David Miller for Congress, his staff and volunteers joined La Verne’s downtown area where the La Verne Chamber of Commerce hosted a wide variety of exhibitors displaying the community’s cache of hot rods, restored classic cars, food vendors, community organizations and candidates for public office at the Cool Cruise 2012 La Verne Business Expo on Saturday.

With weather typical of Southern California and ambiance enhanced by locally legendary classic rock cover band, The Answer, many exhibitors showcased their unique and vibrantly restored classic cars and hot rods.  Local family-owned small businesses also attempted to broaden their networks to include the community which is driven by threads of entrepreneurialism, and plays a key role in the tight-knit fellowship for which La Verne is historically renowned.

Joining the festivities in La Verne was David Miller, a family man and small business owner from Glendora who campaigns to represent California’s 32nd Congressional District after the November election.  Miller was eager to speak with voters while a squad of his campaign volunteers swept the downtown area, distributing campaign literature and pocket Constitutions that included the Declaration of Independence.

Miller spoke of the vital role founding documents play for citizens to keep their government in check.  “Without an understanding of the Constitution, the Declaration of Independence, and other founding documents, citizens cannot know the legal limits of the federal government and what governmental abuses of power were unacceptable to our founders.  Every day, more citizens are awakening to find that the economic downturn is caused largely in part by abuses of power by government.”

“Extra-constitutional regulations make it nearly impossible for businesses small and large to remain operational, and to keep Americans working.  Many of our current legislators step outside of their oath to defend and protect the Constitutional limitations they swore to uphold,” Miller said.

“These politicians are ultimately destroying the purchasing power of the dollar by ignoring the limits of their Congressional privileges specified in Article 1, section 8 of the Constitution,” said Miller, “and they are only worsening the struggles of American families.  The more educated and involved citizens become the better chance we have to fight these abuses of power that affect us all.”

Miller will attend the Meet the Candidates Legislative Reception hosted by the San Dimas Chamber of Commerce on May 25, 2012 from 6pm to 8pm at the San Dimas Civic Center.

David Miller is running for California’s 32nd Congressional District as a ‘citizen candidate.’  His campaign emphasizes restoring obedience to the Constitution, legalizing freedom, and maintaining America’s tradition of economic prosperity.
